Cabin Filters: From Dust to Allergens — How to Choose a Solution Based on Customer Needs

Cabin Filters: From Dust to Allergens — How to Choose a Solution Based on Customer Needs

The cabin filter is no longer an "invisible" spare part. Today, drivers are increasingly paying attention to the quality of air inside the vehicle — especially in megacities and during the plant flowering season. For service shops, this is an opportunity to increase the average ticket by offering a filter that matches actual operating conditions.

Three Types of Protection

  • Dust filters: Trap particles larger than 10 microns (pollen, road dust). A basic solution for regions with moderate air pollution.
  • Activated carbon filters: A layer of activated carbon (200–400 g/m²) adsorbs gaseous pollutants — ozone, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds. Recommended for urban driving.
  • Anti-allergen filters: Special impregnation to neutralize allergens that cause allergic rhinitis (runny nose), conjunctivitis (redness and itching of the eyes), sneezing, coughing, and asthma attacks. Certified according to the ISO 16890 standard.

Service Life and Hidden Risks

The recommended replacement interval is 15,000–25,000 km or 12 months. In high humidity, mold and microorganisms can grow on a saturated filter, causing customer complaints about unpleasant odors. Timely replacement reduces reputational risks for the service shop.

STELLOX offers a full range of cabin filters of all three types for European, Asian, and American models. This allows partners to create a personalized offer based on the customer's request — from basic protection to comprehensive air purification.

Recommendation for Service Shops:

When selling a filter, ask the customer about their operating conditions (city/highway, presence of allergies) — this increases conversion to more expensive solutions (carbon, anti-allergen) and builds trust in the service.

Modern injection systems impose strict requirements on fuel purity. In diesel Common Rail and petrol GDI systems, the permissible size of mechanical impurities is no more than 4 microns. Exceeding this threshold leads to rapid wear of injectors and the high-pressure fuel pump. Two Filtration Stages Preliminary filtration: A strainer filter in the fuel pump ... The ingress of just 1 gram of unfiltered dust into a cylinder reduces the service life of the piston assembly by 5–7%. For turbocharged engines, the consequences are even more severe: abrasive particles accelerate the wear of turbine blades, leading to costly repairs as early as 80,000–100,000 km. Timely replacement of the oil filter is one of the most cost-effective maintenance operations. However, an error in selection (incorrect bypass valve cracking pressure, poor quality of the anti-drain valve) can negate the advantages of even the most expensive oil and lead to oil starvation during a cold start.
